Having a closet that is organized makes getting ready so much easier and more efficient. You are also much more likely to wear the clothes you own and therefore spend less money when you can visibly identify what you have.

Experts suggest the following steps for organizing the perfect haven for your apparels:

1) Remove all clothes and shoes from your closet (off hangers, out of bins, etc) and fold and sort them in piles away from the closet

2) Determine what apparels you will keep by making a “keep” pile (those you wear on a regular basis).

3) If you haven’t worn something for a year….strongly consider moving it to a “donate” pile. Someone will benefit from your goods!

4) Decide which clothes should be “stored away.” These include the clothes you won’t be wearing for a while because they are no longer seasonally appropriate.

5) For items you have determined will be “stored” for future use, put them in plastic bins. They can be placed in the back of your closet, under your bed, or in another part of your home. And make sure to “label” them so it’s easier to identify what is in the bin.

6) Clean inside the closet. Use a damp rag to wash off shelves and poles. If needed, vacuum or sweep the floor and clear away any cob webs. Do this BEFORE putting any clothes or shoes back into the closet.

7) Hang up your “keep” piled clothes (those not being stored away for future use). There are many options for hanging your items and there isn’t necessarily a “perfect” way. It’s really about preference but here are a few suggestions:

  • Organize your clothes by type (ie. tank tops, shirts, pants, dresses)

  • Organize by color

  • Organize by item size (ie. shirt length, etc)

  • Organize using differently colored hangers to distinguish between “category” of clothes (ie. pink = work clothes; white = casual clothes; blue = formal clothes, etc.) I prefer to hang ALL my clothes using one color as I enjoy the consistent look.

8) If you are placing your “stored” clothes in your closet, make the most of open spaces by placing your bins under your hanging clothes or stacking above on shelves.

9) Organize your shoes. I suggest putting them in bins to prevent dust/dirt from collecting on them. You can find some great and stylish options at Ikea. Also consider organizing them by “type” or by “how often” you wear them. And you can take the extra step of labeling them if the shoes in the bins are not visually obvious. Further, add a picture of the shoe on the bin label.

10) Make sure to go through any other boxes or items that were being stored in your closet. Organize loose papers and trash them or move them to your office area. If you have towels, sheets, or blankets, move them to your linen closet or bathroom. Be sure to sort and do the appropriate “purging” on these items where necessary.

11) My favorite step….Make your closet more appealing to the eye! Ideas here are endless. Some simple options:

  • Add a fun paint color!

  • Hang jewelry on a decorative hanger to keep them organized and visually appealing

  • Hang pictures or mirrors in your closet

  • Add a few picture frames on an available shelf

  • Put your bracelets in a glass jar and place on a shelf

  • Organize your fragrances on a shelf

  • Add a new and stylish light fixture

Have some fun trying out these suggested steps above to create your own treasured space. And if you need some help, you've come to the right place! Feel free to share any other suggestions or tips you have for the perfect organized space!!
